Rampant modernisation and commercialisation are leading to exerting our planet and making its devoid of its natural resources. Being an environmentally-conscious public sector enterprise and for underlining its commitment towards its Corporate Social Responsibility,Airports Authority of India, Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal istaking a pioneering initiative. The airportdecided to make it plastic free by banning the use of single-use plastic itemsonthe airportin September 2018.
Proactively acting on the Hon’ble PM’s clarion call, as per the directions issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and as per AAI, CHQ instructions to beat plastic pollution, in first phase, Bhopal Airport had been declared ‘Single-Use Plastic Free Airport Terminal’ in January 2019.
Various steps were undertaken to eliminate the single-use plastic items at passenger terminal and city side of the Bhopal Airport, making it single –use plastic free zone. These steps include banning of single-use plastic items like straws, plastic cutleries, plastic platesetc.and switching over to other packaging alternatives and replacements. AAI, Bhopal has alsoenhanced its waste management systems and is promoting the use of eco-friendly sustainable alternatives progressively, like use of bio-degradable garbage bags in the garbage bins and installation of plastic bottle crushing machine at the airport.
In ensuring the successful implementation of dissuading the usage of single-use plastic items, AAI, Bhopal has been carrying out internal auditsalong with stakeholders.
In its quest for making environmental conservation an ingrained organisational mission, AAI, Bhopal hastaken many steps. From time to time plantation drive has been organised. To spread awareness among the passengers plant sapling has been distributed among passengers on the world environment day. Work for establishment of a solid waste management plant is on progress. Other than this, a solar power plant of 1 Megawatt capacity has also been established.
As a part of this policy, AAI, Bhopal is conscious and committed towards sensitizing all employees and stakeholders to fulfil environmental obligation by reducing carbon footprint.
